More information : [SU 69177171] Southcote Manor [G.T.] (remains of) [T.I.] Moat [G.T.]. (1) Southcote Manor, a fortified 15th century moated house, was demolished circa 1922 (b). Prior to this the structure incorporated the stone-lined moat and part of the original house (a). The 1:1250 survey of the water-filled moat has been revised. The retaining wall of the inner side of the moat, and some fragmentary building, remains on the platform are of modern brick. (2) C F Slade, excavating here for Reading Museum and MPBW, tentatively concluded that early 13th century occupation on the original ground level was covered by a mound 5-10ft deep, composed of material thrown up when the moat was dug. 'On the mound buildings of three main phases, 14th century - Tudor - Modern could be distinguished.' (3) SU 692717: Southcote Manor, moated site, scheduled No 96. (4) Additional bibliography (5)(6)
