"The old house of Newbiggin stands low, near some wild broken ground, with a brook or runner in front. The walls are of solid masonry, and the chief staircase of stone. There are or were, the remains of something like a peal or tower in the west." (2)

"The remains of a peel or tower on the west (at Newbiggin), mentioned by Surtees (2), are now taken down." Other information similar to Authority 2. (3)

(NZ 22112401) "There is no tower here, but about 50 years ago a building (site pointed out) was pulled down and in the walls were very narrow windows - this may have been the tower." (a) "There is no trace of this presumably medieval peel." (6)

Listed as a possible castle by Cathcart King. (7)
