The outer walls of an Anglo-Saxon nave are visible and remains of the original west quoins can be seen within the aisles of the present Early English church of St Andrew's at Aycliffe. In the western parts of the aisles are a number of Anglo-Saxon carved stones and two Anglo-Saxon cross-shafts, which formerly stood in the churchyard and are dated by Collingwood to the late 10th century. A round headed gravestone found during the restoration in 1881 is also in the church. (2-3)
