More information : (SU 65692397) St Nicholas's Chapel (NR) (remains of) (NAT) (1) The ruins of the late 13th c. chapel of St. Nicholas measure some 36 ft. by 16ft. internally and contain a south doorway with a two-light window on either side, an east window with three trefoil headed lights and a two light window in the north wall. The chapel was disused but apparently complete in 1703 (a). (2) Full architectural description. (3) The remains are overgrown and in poor condition: parts of the S and E walls have collapsed and the only surviving feature is the two-light window in the W side of the S wall. Published 1:2500 correct. (4) Excavations in 1960 at the site of St Nicholas's Chapel produced 57 pottery sherds, most of which were parts of small cooking pots of late Saxon date, probably circa 1000 - circa 1150 AD.
