More information : NZ 24721377 Manor House (NR) (site of) (NAT) (1) The ancient manor house of Coniscliffe, an inheritance of the old Lords of Graystoke was situated at Low Coniscliffe. (2-3) The surface area at the site indicated on OS 6" is very disturbed and contains fragmentary banks, some forming two adjoining rectilinear enclosures on the east side. Within the northern enclosure is a scooped area of uncertain purpose. No definite building foundations are recognisable here. At NZ 24661374 is a nearly square banked enclosure, probably representing a building, with an entrance to the south east and at NZ 24721373 is a rectilinear banked enclosure with a western annexe, again with no definite building foundations, although in one interior bank are numerous stones which may have been used for building. Although no traces of banks or any other feature connecting these enclosures are now visible they all appear to be of the same period, and it appears very likely that they were associated with the old manor house of Coniscliffe. (4) The site consists of three disparate rectilinear mounds, rather than enclosures as noted by Fl. All are small, the largest being some 15.0m. by 10.0m. and each contains sufficient stone to suggest turf-covered foundations. Considered individually, or as a whole they do not form any intelligible building pattern, but are clearly evidence for the site of the manor house, which is being encroached upon from the south-east by new houses.
