Grid Ref : SU5156383729
Summary : Two Bronze Age bowl barrows and a pair of confluent round barrows aligned roughly east to west and located 270 metres north east of Churn Farm. The barrow mounds to the east and west of the confluent pair both survive as upstanding stone and earth mounds measuring 25 metres and 33 metres in diameter respectively and standing up to 1.6 metres high. The mounds were originally surrounded by quarry ditches from which material was obtained for their construction. These have become infilled over the years but are known from excavation and aerial photographs to survive as buried feature 3 metres wide. The pair of confluent mounds forming the middle of the group are no longer separate adjoining earthworks but form a single irregular mound measuring 34 metres east-west by 27 metres north-south and standing up to 1.8 metres high. The two separate mound summits and the 'ghost' outlines of the individual mounds can be seen however, in the contours of the surviving earthwork. Part excavation carried out in 1848 produced a number of burnt bone fragments in the vicinity of the barrows. Scheduled. The barrows are visible on aerial photographs, first as earthworks and more recently as cropmarks. The two confluent barrows appear to be surrounded by a single ditch. A third small ring ditch can be seen as a cropmark immediately to the south of the eastern barrow in this group.

Tumuli [G.T.] (1)

A. Lat 51 32' 58". Long 1 15' 25" a bowl-barrow twentyfive
paces in diameter and four feet high joined by a slight "col"
on the South.
B. Two confluent bowl barrows, thirty five paces east-west,
twentyeight paces north-south and six feet high.
C. Lat. 51 32' 58". Long 1 15' 20" a bowl-barrow thirty three
paces in diameter and six feet high, opened in 1848 when burnt
bones were found. There appears to be a circular ditch to the
south, but it is unlikely to be a barrow. Scheduled. (2-3)

The barrows are situated at the top of a hill and are under
spring barley. They are all ditchless and have been reduced in
height by ploughing, 'B' can no longer be identified as two
confluent barrow. Published survey (25") revised.

There is no trace of a circular ditch to the south. (4)

The barrows are visible on aerial photographs, first as earthworks, and more recently as cropmarks. The two confluent barrows appear to be surrounded by a single ditch. (6-7)

A third small ring ditch can be seen as a cropmark immediately to the south of the eastern barrow in this group. (8)
