More information : Area centred SU 5810 8280. Earthworks, Celtic Fields, E.I.A. and ?L.B.A. pottery. Many Celtic Field lynchets and layout suggests they are contemporary with the earthworks. Possibly 'Hut Circle' at west end of the parallel ditches, having a ditch and inner bank. A few I.A. and one possibly L.B.A. sherd found in molehills near the earthworks (N.B. No R.B. sherds found so far) SU 582 828. The trivallate earthwork continues north [actually E.N.E.] at least as far as the Wantage road. (1-2) Except for two short terraces at SU 582 827 (which may be medieval) all traces of a field system have been ploughed out and the reported 'hut circle' cannot be identified. The pottery found by Mr. Rhodes remains in his possession. The Earthwork, part bivallate and part trivallate, now forms a boundary to the recently cultivated Moulsford Downs. It is possibly a remnant of a LBA/IA ranch boundary earthwork and extends from SU 5804 8274 to SU 5824 8280. Surveyed at 1/2500. The Museum 6" shows an extension eastwards as far as SU 840 8289 taken from an air photograph. The photograph shows a double ditch cropmark though nothing is visible from the ground in this section. The feature described by the above authorities was seen as an earthwork and mapped from good quality aerial photographs as part of the Thames Valley NMP. It appeared as a pair of parallel linear banks extending for a distance of c 145m centred at SU 58168277. (MORPH No. TG.40.7.1) This description is based on data from the RCHME MORPH2 database (5). |
