More information : [SU 5622 8828] Moat [G.T.] Manor House [T.I.] (1) The Manor House of South Moreton, now a farmhouse appears to date from the late 15th or early 16th century. It has a central hall and two wings but has been much altered. A moat surrounds the site. (2) Irregular 2 storey block of ancient origin on moated site. The north west block and part of the centre may be 13/14th century. The north east end is a 15/16th century timber framed construction. (3) An incomplete dry moat of unusual shape with a causeway on the east which develops into a holloway. To the north of the moat, but connected to it is another dry ditch, the purpose of which is obscure but which may have been a fish pond. Published survey (25") revised. The house has been largely restored with the exception of the north-east wing. See G.P. AO/63/247/8. (4)
The earthwork remains of a Medieval moat at SU 5624 8834 which forms an irregular asymmetrical enclosure 85 x 130m. The site is masked to the south-west by the incursion of the houses of South Moreton. Attached to the north-western and north-eastern corners of the moat are two short lengths of bank. No internal features were visible. These features were mapped from good quality air photographs.
