Summary : Site of a moated fortified manor house, licence to crenellate granted in 1447. The house has since been demolished, though traces of a moat can still be seen as earthworks, standing 1 metre high in places. |
More information : [SU 5526 7459] Manor House on site of [T.I.] Castle. Moat [G.T.] (1) The manor house at Yattendon stands on the site of a castle and there are traces of a moat which surrounded it, the west side of which is well preserved. A licence to crenellate the manor house and to impark 600 acres was granted in 1447. This house has long since been pulled down. The manor of Yattendon was left by King Alfred to his wife in his will. (2-4) The dwelling at Yattendon was evidently a fortified manor house rather than a castle. The South and East sides of the moat are represented by a scarp averaging 1.0m. high. Weston's map shows three sides of a water filled moat around the Manor house, with the west side absent. There are now no traces of the west and north sides. (A low wide ditch shown on the 25" at SU 5517 7463 is on lower ground and unlikely to have been associated with the moat. It now receives sewage effluent). Moat surveyed at 1/2500. (5)
