Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 236832

Hob Uid: 236832
Location :
Hampshire
Basingstoke and Deane
Hannington
Grid Ref : SU5269054580
Summary : Cropmarks of an enclosure identified on a 1947 aerial photograph. These were initially identified as a Romano British settlement due to pottery finds in the area. In 2000, metal detecting, field walking and a small scale excavation resulted in the site being reinterpreted as the site of a Medieval hunting lodge. A geophysical survey was carried out in 2002 by Southampton University and the results agreed with the Medieval hunting lodge theory. The Roman pottery finds are likely from a site west of Tidgrove Warren Farm.
More information : (Area centred SU 52645458) "Roman Camp? Approximate
size (88 x 44 yds.) and position of rectangle shown by darker
colour of corn on lines about 1.5 yds. across May 30th 1926.
Roman pottery occurs". (1)

SU 52695458: The bank and outer ditch of a roughly rectangular
enclosure are revealed as crop-marks (light and dark bands
respectively) on air photographs. The enclosure measures c.80 x
50 m. overall. Former watercourse visible along east side. (2)

The site of this enclosure is at the bottom of an eastern slope.

Apart from the remains of part of the ditch (c.8 m. wide and
0.3 m. deep) on the south side, no trace of the earthwork can
be made out.

The enclosure was probably an R-B settlement site associated
with the surrounding Celtic field system, SU 55 SW 4. (3)

There is now no trace of this enclosure in young crop and no
surface finds were made. (4)
