Roughly cylindrical milestone of sandstone, 55 in. high, 16 in. diameter, found in 1953 in gravel-quarrying at a point 535 yds. west of Dere Street, the roman road to the north, and 75 yds. north of the Piercebridge-Gainford road. It was unearthed some distance from Dere Street; whether it belonged to a branch-road is unknown. Now deposited in the Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle. Drawn by R.P.W., 1954. JRS xliv (1954) 106. (1) The milestone was found only a few feet below the surface according to Mr Roe, (the foreman at Messrs Harris's Quarry), who indicated the find spot on the ground at NZ 20731613. It is cylindrical in form, 1.4m high and 0.4m in diameter. (2)
