Summary : Site of the deserted medieval vilage of Atlow Cowton.
More information : Lost village of Atlow Cowton. Beresford states that the village of Atlow Cowton has sometimes been identified with South Cowton (NZ 20 SE 4) and sometimes given a separate existence. VCH however say that although it was originally formed to the east of North and South Cowton, it had become synonymous with East Cowton by 1917. It was separately taxed in 1301. In depositions of 1850 the parson of Langton on Swale testified that "he knoweth the towne of South Cowton, and the place where he hath heard say Atley Cowton stoode". (Atley Hill at NZ 286024 and Atley Fields at NZ 291028 on OS 1:10000) (1-2)
