More information : [SU 4969 9757] MOATED MOUND [G.T.] (1)
An early Norman moated mound, c. 10ft. high, lies about 80 yards N.E. of Fitz Harry's House on the northern outskirts of Abingdon. The tongue of land immediately east of the mound, is also surrounded by water, including the feed-stream of the moat, and may have served as a rudimentary bailey. It is probably that the mound was built about 1071-84. (2)
This is a motte, but there is no evidence of a bailey. The tongue of land to the east is a natural feature isolated by two narrow streams. Surveyed at 1/2500. (3) |
