More information : [SU 4411 7183] Roman Building [GS] (site of). (1)

A very large Roman villa was partially excavated at Mudhole
[Mud Hall Cottages SU 443 718] on Wyfield Farm, Boxford circa
1870.

Part of the foundations on the west side were exposed and finds
included part of a bronze armilla, pottery and tiles, also a
sherd of Samian ware now in Newbury Museum. Published as
probably a villa (4). (2-4)

The presence of a Roman building is confirmed by a scatter of
Roman brick and tile (but no pottery) on the ploughed surface
extending for approximately 30.0m about the published siting.
This is on a slight S.E. slope. There is no trace of a building
platform and no particular concentration of material. The
fragment of armilla, pottery and tiles are no longer traceable
in Newbury Museum. (5)
