Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 233495

Hob Uid: 233495
Location :
West Berkshire
Chaddleworth
Grid Ref : SU4072079560
Summary : Probable Medieval ring work visible as a cropmark, measuring 46 metres in diameter and mapped from aerial photographs. A collection of 12th century pottery has been found on the site.
More information : A small motte and banks noticed on a property near Fawley. (1)

Mr. Kaines-Thomas pointed out Mitchell Copse, Chaddleworth as being the area in which the earthwork was found. It is at SU40727957 and consists of a ringwork formed by a bank with an outer ditch. There is no central mound and no causeway or obvious entrance way. It is not a motte and its inherent weakness suggests that it was of little if any defensive value. A number of probably early 12th c. sherds (identified by Reading Museum) were found on the surface. The work overlooks the site of Woolley D.M.V. and is probably of medieval origin although its purpose is obscure.

Surveyed at 1/2500. (2)

The cropmark remains of a circular single ditched enclosure with a diameter of 46m and an apparent central pit described by the previous authorities were seen centred at SU 4072 7956 and mapped from aerial photographs. (3)

Listed as a possible castle by Cathcart King. (4)
