Newbury castle built prior to 1152 was a fragmentary ruin by 1626-7, and was completely demolished when the Canal basin (now filled in) was constructed circa. 1723. The site appears to have been south of the Kennet near the wharf. [Map included within Auth. 4 shows canal basin extending to a point immediately south of O.S.siting]. (2-4)
Authority for publication is by Walter Money. Included is an extract from the original Ordnance Survey Object Name Book (dated 1877) which stated that there was evidence (unspecified) to determine the exact locality of the castle. (5)
The O.S. siting falls in what is now part of Newbury Bus Station. There are no remains. (6)
