Hob Uid: 230016
Location :
Hampshire
Eastleigh
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SU4600018000
Summary : Roman pottery and coins were found here circa 1878.
More information : About 1921 15 Roman vessels in perfect condition were
found in a loft at Valewood House near Haslemere and were
presented to the Educational Museum at Haslemere. With them was
a letter saying they were found in 1878 at a depth of 4 1/2 ft
in the Ballast field at Bishopstoke. This is probably the same
site as that described as 'out towards Swaythling' in Hants
Antiquary and Naturalist 1, 1891, 48. The discoveries there
were probably made about 1878 and are said to have included
'urns and crockery of every description', a small jar of about
200 Roman coins and a huge trench containing horses heads and
grain. Some of the finds went to Porchester Museum, some were
received by 'a gentleman from Southampton' and some (probably
those found later at Valewood House) were claimed by the
Railway Company. (Crawford, HFC 9, 1925, 399 suggests that this
site may have been connected with the Roman Building at SU 452 162, SU41 NE 8).(1)
