Summary : Westcott was the site of a Templars and Hospitallers camera. The Templars were granted substantial holdings at Westcott by Robert Achard in Henry III's reign. These passed to the Hospitallers after the suppression of the Templars, and at the suppression of the Hospitallers, a gatehouse and house were recorded there. |
More information : Monastic buildings, belonging to the order of St. John of Jerusalem, existed at Westcot [SU 3487], Sparsholt, before the Dissolution. They included a gate-house and a 'house with a cross on it'. The latter was pulled down and an ordinary dwelling-house was built on the site before 1589. (1-2) Local enquiries and ground inspection failed to reveal the site of the monastic buildings. (3)
Westcot is shown as a Camera on a map of monastic sites in Oxfordshire. (4)
Westcot is listed as a religious house formerly belonging to the Knight's Hospitallers. (5) |
