More information : (A SU 30047391 and B SU 30057390) Tumuli (NR). (1) (A) Ramsbury 2, a bowl barrow, 22 paces in diameter x 6 ft high, with a large hollow in the centre of the mound (3). A Late Bronze Age sherd with finger-tip ornament was found by O Meyrick. (B) Ramsbury 3, a bowl barrow, 15 paces in diameter x 1 ft high. Nearly ploughed out. A further bowl barrow (C SU 30177403) Ramsbury 3a, found by Grinsell and Meyrick in a circular plantation, in 1951. Dimensions approx 18 paces (limits undefined) x 2 1/2 ft high. Grinsell considers this to be probably the third barrow in the group shown by Colt Hoare (4) on his map. (2-4) Area under standing corn and barrows not closely investigated. a. Extant and bush covered; published 25" survey appears correct. b. No indicatiion of this barrow, almost certainly destroyed by ploughing. c. Most probably extant within tree clump but not investigated because of surrounding crops. (5)
The earthwork remains of a single mound presumed to be a Bronze Age round barrow was seen centred at SU 3004 7389 and mapped from aerial photographs. The barrow has a diameter of c.16m. No trace of the two further barrows described by the previous authorities could be seen on available aerial photographs. (5) |
