Turret 14a

Hob Uid: 22798
Location :
Northumberland
Heddon-on-the-Wall
Grid Ref : NZ1010067700
Summary : The approximate site of Roman turret 14A, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. There are no visible remains.
More information : NZ 101 677. Turret 14a (site of) (1)

Horsley saw remains of Turret 14a on the rocky top of a bold knoll called Eppies Hill. (NZ 1010 6769). (2)

There are no surface remains; but a concentration of stone in the field boundary hedge, at NZ 1011 6770, on the highest point of the hill, may be an indication of its site. (3)

It has been claimed (eg see authority 2) that Horsley saw a turret on Eppies Hill but his description (4a) is ambiguous. A turret is marked on his map N and a little E of High Seat as `exp turret'. OS (see authority 1) has positioned the turret on the crown of the hill a little W of High Seat. Horsley mentions in his text (pg 140) the fact that the wall deliberately takes in the high ground at High Seat (Eppies Hill) so it is difficult to understand why he does not specifically mention the turret in this context. There are no visible remains of the turret in area NZ 101 677. (4)

Scheduled (5)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6)
