Summary : The site of Roman turret 11B, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. The postulated position based on the discovery of pottery and 'occupation earth' only. The site is under the A69.
More information : NZ 1404 6689 Turret 11B (GSC) (site of) (TI) (1) This was located in 1928 on the east side, and near the top of Great Hill about 565 yards east of the assumed position of milecastle 12. No masonry was discovered, the position being indicated only by pottery and occupation earth. (2) The site is covered by a modern road. (3) The presumed site of turret 11B, Great Hill, at NZ 1403 6688 was excavated in 1919. No structure was recorded, `the site was only recognisable by characteristic occupation earth and pottery' (4a). Thus the location of the turret must remain unproven. The above location is now beneath the A69. (4) Scheduled (5) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6)
