More information : NZ 148 668 Milecastle 11 (Site of) (1)
The site is unestablished. What MacLaughan took to be the position "1 1/2 furlongs east of Frenchman's Houses" (NZ 1485 6685) was proved, in 1928, to be an old pit-heap. The normal interval falls about the middle of the old village of Throckley Bank Top. This area was carefully trenched, the same year, without result. Miss Phillips, in 1959, was also unsuccessful when she trenched on the site of some demolished miners' cottages (centred NZ 1496 6687); the milecastle has apparently been entirely obliterated, and its assumed site is under the Working Men's Club (NZ 1506 6684) about 1620 yds from Milecastle 10. There are no surface indications of this site. The area is covered by modern development. (5)
The presumed site of Milecastle 11 was investigated in 1928 when trenches were cut on the present site of old cottages on the south side of the main road at Throckley Bank Top (6a). Further investigation in this general area occurred in 1929 (6b) and 1959 (6c) but without success. The Central Excavation Unit observed a cable trench cut through this site to a depth of 0.5m without result (6d). No surface trace; grid reference NZ 1498 6686 indicates the measured position only.
