Turret 8b

Hob Uid: 22659
Location :
Newcastle upon Tyne
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : NZ1835066110
Summary : The approximate site of Roman turret 8B, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. It is buried beneath a modern road. Its position is derived from measurements from other monuments.
More information : NZ 1834 6611. Turret 8b (GSC) (Site of) (T.I.) (1)

This is situated 532 yards from turret 8a and 548 yards from milecastle 9. The modern road was slightly further north and the south wall could be examined. It was two courses high and 19 feet 10 inches long, with a doorway in the normal position. (2)

No visible remains. The site is now completely covered by a modern road. (3)

The turret was located 558 yards from Chapel House milecastle `below the modern S wall of the roadway in their normal positions' (4a). The turret was located 557 yards from Chapel House milecastle (4b). There is disagreement as to the location of the turrret between the reports (2, 4a and 4b) and as there is no surface trace on the roadside verge (in 1990) the measured position only has been drawn on the RCHME 1:1250 overlay at NY 1835 6611. (4)

Scheduled (5)

Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (6)
