Monument Number 225622

Hob Uid: 225622
Location :
Oxfordshire
Vale of White Horse
Ashbury
Grid Ref : SU2723084540
Summary : 4 Circles (? barrow sites). The cropmark remains of three probable Bronze Age round barrows were mapped from aerial photographs.
More information : [Area SU 27308450] Two circles, seen from the air by
Allen, where the high-road crosses the Ridgeway in the field in
the north-east angle of the crossroads on Ashbury Hill.
There is a line of trees on the west edge of this field and a
few yards east of these the two circles almost join.
The north one, 80 feet in diameter, has a ditch 2 feet deep and
c. 5 feet wide. The central area and 2 trial trenches were dug
but nothing was found. May have been a cattle pen. The south
circle was similar to the last in all details, and again
nothing was found. There are two more circles on the north edge
of this field, these were not dug and nothing is visible on the
surface. (1)

Allen photographs show two circles at SU 2726 8447 and SU 2728
8445. There is no photograph of the circles in the northern
part of the field. Nothing is visible on R.A.F. A.P.'s.

The ground is ploughed and no soil marks are visible. (2)

SU 273 846 Linear and pit-like marks seen on aerial photos of Allen. (3)

The cropmark remains of four probable Bronze Age barrows were seen and recorded as follows:
SU 2728 8448 - a single ditched barrow with a diameter of 20m.
SU 2730 8446 - a single ditched barrow with a diameter of 20m adjacent to the barrow at SU 2728 8448.
SU 2732 8448 - a possible incomplete single ditched round barrow with a diameter of 10m.
SU 2715 8416 - an incomplete single ditched round barrow with a diameter of c.27m seen on a single 1933 Allen photograph (Oxon SMR AP.64A 14-May-1933).

All four probable barrows were mapped from aerial photographs. (4-5)
