More information : ['A' - SU 27248163] TUMULUS [G.T.] ['B' - SU 27428155] TUMULUS [G.T.] (1) Two barrows south of Swinley Copse, Ashbury. A - Bowl barrow, 18 yards diameter and 3 feet high. No ditch visible. B - Tree-covered bowl barrow, 23 yards in diameter, 2 1/2 feet high with slight ditch visible on west and south. (2) Both mounds have been spread by ploughing but are most probably bowl barrows. 'A' is now 0.5m. high. 'B' is 0.5m. high and the slight ditch recorded in 2 has been destroyed. Published survey (25") revised. (3)
The cropmark and earthwork remains of three probable Bronze Age barrows were mapped from aerial photographs. Two have been described by the previous authorities at SU 2724 8163 and SU 2741 8156, and a third was seen as a ring ditch 20m in diameter at SU 2720 8162 on oblique photographs taken in 1976. (4-5) |
