More information : (SU 29048777) Roman Villa (R) (Site of) (NAT) (1)
Two Roman tessellated pavements, a corridor and bath buildings were uncovered at Woolstone in May 1844, and a later report records foundations and large quantities of tiles, tesserae and pottery in the neighbouring fields. One of the pavements is in the Ashmolean Museum. Three skeletons, thought to be Saxon burials, were found in the corridors of the villa and several other also thought to be Saxon, were found nearby (2-4).
SU 289878: Excavations by Miss Ann Hamilton in 1955 rediscovered one of the pavements found in 1844, and a 30 foot corridor bounding a courtyard, also the northern wall of the whole complex. Pottery finds were from the 1st to the 4th centuries. (2-6)
