More information : (SU 23927914) Tumulus (NR) (1) Wanborough 2 - a circular mound visible on air-photographs(2), 'found' and described by Passmore as "a round barrow which has been gutted but which contained a sarsen cairn". Visited by Grinsell in 1949 and described by him as a probable bowl barrow, 25 paces in diameter x 3 ft high, much burrowed, but with a suggestion of a ditch. (2-4) A 28.0 metre diameter, 1.3 metre high bowl barrow. There is now no trace of a ditch. Under plough. Surveyed at 1:2500. (5) Round barrow 75 feet in diameter by 3 feet high. The ditch has been ploughed out. Scheduled WILTS 903. Visited 15.10.76. (6)
The possible Bronze Age bowl barrow refered to by the previous authorities is visible as an earthwork and has been mapped from aerial photographs including those in reference 2. It has been ploughed level and is now visible as a cropmark. The barrow measures approximately 25m in diameter and is located at the grid reference given in reference 1. (7) |
