Summary : A Romano-British rectangular tesselated pavement was discovered in 1725 by a Mr George at Froxfield Farm. This is apparently a different pavement to that discovered at the nearby Rudge villa (SU 26 NE 12). However, its location, and in fact any other details, are unknown. It has been included by Scott in her gazetteer of Roman villas. |
More information : A rectangular tessellated pavement, divided into three parts was discovered by Mr George at Froxfield Farm. (From the context this appears to be distinct from the Rudge Villa - SU 26 NE 12). (1) It is not possible from available evidence to determine the position of the pavement. Willis (1) states that Mr George made a drawing of this pavement and also of the one he found "on his own estate" at Rudge (SU 26 NE 12), which suggests two pavements on two separate estates. Extent of Froxfield Farm unknown (not shown on Andrews and Dury map 1773 and is now incorporated into other farms). Froxfield Manor Farmhouse (now a private dwelling) is at SU 29876814. This site is not recorded in the VCH Wilts. (2)
