Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 223276

Hob Uid: 223276
Location :
Wiltshire
Winterslow
Grid Ref : SU2350035700
Summary : Linear earthwork on Easton Down. Excavations have found the earthwork to comprise a ditch flanked on either side by bank. It is thought to be part of an earthwork system, possibly late Bronze Age in date.
More information : (SU 235357) Ditch (NR). (1)

A bivallate ditch on Easton Down, forming part of a complex of
ditches (see plan (2)) revealed by fieldwork and
air-photographs. Considered by Hawkes (3) to be a system of
Late Bronze Age ranch boundaries. (2-4)

This ranch boundary complex has been revised from OS APs by AR
Gp under my supervision.

Because of the nature of the establishment in which it falls no
APs were available to the Field Group and all AP plotting has
been done post-fieldwork directly onto the astrafoils. No
post-plotting AO Fieldwork has been done. (5)

JFS Stone sectioned one of the linear earthworks during his investigations of the Easton Down flint mines and associated sites (See SU 23 NW 26). His trench was located at roughly SU 23653575, and demonstrated that the earthwork at this point consisted of a pair of parallel banks with a ditch running between. The ditch was markedly asymmetric in profile. No datable material was recovered. (6)

The form of the earthwork and the topographical positioning suggest were considered by Bradley et al (in the context of an analysis of prehistoric land division on Salisbury Plain) to be typical of late Bronze Age linear earthwork systems in the area. (7)
