More information : A rectangular earthwork at SU 278130 (1) Centred at SU27761294, is a rectangular earthwork some 70.0m in length north to south, by 42.0m transversely, formed by a wasted bank some 6.0m in width and up to 0.9m in height with traces of an outer ditch. The northern side is heavily mutilated and gaps in the east and south sides could be entrances or mutilations. The work falls on fairly level ground and is at present partially covered with mature oak trees. It could be a simple coppice enclosure but the name 'Princes Lodge' appears here on the Map of the New Forest (Wm Driver 1789) and this suggests it could be the site of one of the Md Royal Hunting lodges. Surveyed at 1:2500 (2)
The earthworks are as described by source 2, and are visible only as a slight earthwork. They are dissimilar to New Forest medieval hunting lodge remains in plan and form.(3) |
