Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 222029

Hob Uid: 222029
Location :
Swindon
Central Swindon South
Grid Ref : SU1800082000
Summary : An inhumation of uncertain date was found in 1923 during widening of Coate Road.
More information : A skeleton, much broken up, was found 3'6" deep in widening the N. side of the road west of the first milestone on Coate Road. No information as to position of skeleton except that the arms were crossed. No grave goods. June, 1923. (1)

From the appearance of the map it does not seem as if the road
has been widened. It would also seem likely that there would have
been another milestone nearer to Swindon than this, and as the road
in the general area of SU 167827 has been widened it is possible that the find was made somewhere in this area.

There is no milestone shown on early editions of OS 25". (2)
