SHELVING STONES

DESCRIPTION + /

A group of stones probably representing the remains of a chambered long barrow (Grinsell's Winterbourne Monkton 17b). The stones were described by Aubrey and Stukely in the late 17th and mid 18th centuries respectively. However, its subsequent (undocumented) destruction promoted some confusion as to the precise location of the site. Its position has recently been established at SU 1037 7156. No trace of the barrow was seen on available air photographs.
