MONUMENT NO. 221599

DESCRIPTION + /

Bronze Age bowl barrows, listed by Grinsell as Winterbourne Stoke 7 & 9, plus disc or saucer barrow Winterbourne Monkton 10, forming a cemetery with long barrow SU 17 SW 45. A fourth round barrow has also been recorded. All four were dug into by Merewether in 1849. The most productive was Winterbourne Stoke 9, which contained a primary crouched inhumation with beaker, arrowhead, and oxen skulls. Despite Merewether's discovery of animal remains and other items in Winterbourne Stoke 7, there remains doubt as to whether it is a barrow at all.
