More information : (Centred SU 157739) Field System (NR). (Details of fields published on OS 6" 1925). (1) Comprises 2 concentrations of lynchets, one of 50 acres centred SU 161738, the other of 250 acres centred at SU 150740. It should originated earlier than the Late Bronze Age enclosures (SU 17 SW 5 and 6, SU 17 SE 7) in its vicinity which mainly overlie it. (2). Late Bronze Age pottery was found by Meyrick over the whole of the larger group of fields, Iron Age 'A' potsherds at SU 14687427, 15077389, with a concentration at 15057350, and a scatter of Romano-British pottery over those fields centred at SU 15157355. (2-3) Most of the extensive field system has been ploughed down and is now visible only as soilmarks. However 10 hectares of denuded lynchets and field banks up to 0.4 metres high survive on an easterly slope centred at SU 16157377. (4) Nothing visible on available air photographs. (5)
Most of the western part of the field system (on map SU 17 SW) was recorded, and the limits were redefined, when the area was mapped at 1:10,000 from air photographs. This field system appears to be part of that recorded as SU 17 SW 3. (6) |
