DESCRIPTION

A Bronze Age bowl barrow, part of a barrow group southwest of Knap Cottage on Walkers Hill. The barrow was designated as Alton 6 by Grinsell (1957) is situated to the southwest of the group and survives as an earthwork 16 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres high. No traces of the barrow ditch survive. Excavations by J. Thurnham during the 1850s recorded a previously disturbed cremation and an extended female inhumation which he interpreted as intrusive, presumably early medieval.

Barrow B: (SU 1158 6370) Tumuli (NR) (1)

On Walker's Hill - Alton 6 (B); Bowl barrow, 10 paces x 1 ft, excavated by Thurnam, primary cremation had been previously disturbed; intrusive extended skeleton of woman with infant, thought by Thurnam to be Medieval. (2-3)

SU 1158 6370; Alton 6; This barrow is 25 metres overall diameter with a ditch 0.2 metres deep on all but the east side. The central mound, 0.3 metres high, appears to be separated from the ditch by a vague berm which averages 2 metres wide; probably subsequent mutilation.

Resurveyed at 1:2500. (4)

The two Bronze Age bell barrows and the bowl barrow, and the Medieval or Post Medieval pillow mound, described by the previous authority have been mapped from aerial photographs. (5)

Described as a bell barrow (although all other authorities describe it as a bowl barrow), part of a barrow group comprising three round barrows on Walkers Hill. The barrow is situated to the southwest of the group and is 16 metres in diameter and 0.5 metres high. No traces of the barrow ditch survive. Excavations by Thurnham recorded a previously disturbed cremation and an intrusive inhumation - possible medieval in date. (6)
