Summary : Three Bronze Age bowl barrows on Walker's Hill, listed by Grinsell as Alton 2, 3 & 4. 2 and 4 were both excavated by Thurnam in the 1850s, who reported finding "marks of interment after cremation" only. All three are still extant as earthwork mounds, Alton 3 with traces of a surrounding ditch. |
More information : (A: SU 1133 6379) (B: SU 1134 6377) (C: SU 1133 6375) Tumuli (NR). (1) On Walker's Hill - Alton 2 (A); Bowl barrow, 20 paces x 3 ft and Alton 4 (C); bowl barrow, 12 paces x 2 ft, (2) both excavated by Thurnam during 1853-7 who found " marks of cremation only" (3). Alton 3 (B); bowl barrow, 10 paces x 1 1/2 ft with flattish top and visible ditch (2). (2-3) SU 1134 6379: Alton 2; a bowl barrow 24 m diameter and 1.1 m high. No trace of a ditch. SU 1134 6376: Alton 3; A bowl barrow 15 m overall diameter and 0.6 m high above a 0.2 m deep ditch. SU 1134 6375: Alton 4; A bowl barrow 16.0 m diameter and 0.8 m high. No trace of a ditch. The three Bronze Age bowl barrows described by the previous authorities have been mapped from aerial photographs. (5)
