More information : (SU 18376458) Tumulus (NR). (1) At Clench Common - Savernake 5; Bowl barrow, 25 paces x 6 ft, with encircling ditch visible (2). Excavated by B H Cunnington in 1861, when he gave measurements of 52 ft x 11 ft with a ditch 12 ft wide and 3 ft deep. The mound was heavily tree-covered and a section was cut from the east side clean through to the centre: it was unproductive. There had been no disturbance of the mound, which Cunnington now regarded as a doubtful barow. (2-3) A ditched mound situated in woodland on the S crest of Clench Common. It measures 11.0m in overall diameter by 2.6m high with a 'tail' to the NE (ie facing the prevailing winds) and the remains of an excavation trench on the E side. The mound is covered with trees and scrub and the earthen slopes have a 'fresh' appearance. Possibly a windmill mound though positive identification is uncertain. Re-surveyed at 1:2500. (4)
