Summary : Site of Carmelite Friary founded circa 1316. At its suppression in 1538 it was recorded as being dilapidated. It was finally demolished in 1820, and there is documentary evidence that some fragments were re-used in the Priory, a 19th century house built on the site. However, this has not been confirmed. |
More information : (SU 18756897) Priory on Site of (NAT) Priory (NR) (White Friars) (NAT). (1) A house of the White Friars or Carmelites was founded at Marlborough in 1316. There were five friars at its dissolution in 1538. (2) In 1820 the old building was finally demolished and a dwelling house, called the 'Priory', was erected on part of the original site using some of the old materials including a deep recessed window (3) on the east side (4). (3-4) Much of the present building, still called "Priory", is covered in ivy and because of this and the general condition of the stonework it is impossible to differentiate between the C19 building and any re-used earlier work.
