Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 219980

Hob Uid: 219980
Location :
Wiltshire
Amesbury
Grid Ref : SU1231042210
Summary : A possible Bronze Age ring ditch circa 10 metres in diameter was observed immediately east of Stonehenge (SU 14 SW 4) on an aerial photograph taken in 1906. There is no trace on the ground, and the Ordnance Survey suggested that a fungus ring would represent a more plausible explanation. The reported location of the feature was part of the area around Stonehenge covered by Geophysical survey in 1993-4. No such feature appears to have been recorded. No barrow was recorded during aerial photographic mapping surveys by RCHME and English Heritage.
More information : SU 12314221. A possible barrow circle about 10 metres
in diameter is visible on an early AP. (1)

There is no trace of the barrow on the ground; the circle may have
been a fungus ring. (2)

This area was mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. No barrow was identified at this location. Aerial photographic evidence suggests that the feature originally noted was almost certainly a fungus ring. (4)
