Summary : A number of very faint circular marks are visible on some early aerial photographs, but they are more likely to be early twentieth century agricultural marks than archaeological features. They were originally described as part of a group of six possible round barrows identified by OGS Crawford in the area immediately west of the New King barrows (SU 14 SW 111). Four of them were identified with the soil mark sites recorded by RCHME as Amesbury barrows 120-123, and the status of the other two was described as uncertain. |
More information : SU 133421 Rec 6" shows six small circles in this area, ? barrows. (1) There are no indications of any barrows on the ground or on available APs. (2)
The location of these alleged barrows falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. Various faint light marks are visible on early photographs, including those cited by authority 3, but they are more likely to be early twentieth century agricultural mark than archaeological features (5-6). |
