DESCRIPTION

A Neolithic long barrow, listed as Amesbury 14 by Grinsell, and located North of Normanton Gorse. Excavations by Colt Hoare in the early 19th century failed to find any burials. Excavations by Thurnam in the mid-19th century uncovered three skeletons described by him as primary interments. Two of the skulls had been cleft before burial. He also found two crouched inhumations which he regarded as secondary burials. The barrow is still extant as an earthwork. Scheduled.

(SU 11544175) Long Barrow (AT). (1)

Amesbury 14. A ditched long barrow 100 ft in length,
50 ft wide and 5 1/2 ft high. It is orientated SSE-NNW. Excavations by Colt Hoare (Barrow 165) and W. Cunnington failed to locate any burials. Thurnam found the remains of three primary skeletons to the south east, two of the skulls of which had been cleft before burial. There were two crouched round-headed secondary burials. (2-3)

A small long barrow 1.8m high with shallow but well defined side
ditches.

Originally recorded as Amesbury 14 by Goddard. (5)

SU 11544175. A long barrow situated on a south facing slope on the southern edge of Stonehenge Down. Scheduling amended. (7)

The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs, and has been mapped by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. (8)
