More information : (SU 11644415) Tumulus (AT) (Site of) (TI). (1) Durrington 10. A pond barrow, believed destroyed. The enclosed area, measured from pre 1939 APs, is about 50 ft in diameter. (2) There is no trace of this barrow on the ground. (3)
Originally recorded as Durrington 10 by Goddard. (4)
The barrow is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in the 1920s, and has been mapped by EH's Stonehenge WHS Mapping Project. Aerial photographs taken in 1943 indicate that by that time, the barrow had been destroyed by the construction of military buildings at Larkhill. (6-7)
The Bronze Age pond barrow referred to above (1-7) may survive as slight earthworks centred at SU 1164 4416. When Scheduled in 1995 the pond measured 20.5m in diameter and was 0.2m deep. The surrounding bank stood only 0.1m high and 2m wide. It was masked by the concrete trackway to the west and was most obvious on the eastern side. The barrow is clearly visible on early 20th century aerial photographs (see source 6) but was probably damaged during construction of an overlying Second World War military camp (Monument Number 1525185). This area was surveyed by English Heritage in 2010 as part of the Stonehenge WHS Landscape Project, although long grass obscured the subtle earthworks. An area of lush greener vegetation was noted along the western side, although this could be the result of later activity along the concrete road as part of the tree plantation. (8-10) |
