More information : (SU 15834194) Ratfyn Barrow (NR). (1) Grinsell's 57. Bowl barrow, diameter 24 paces, height 8ft. (2) A bowl barrow with no visible ditch. Its measurements accord with those given by Grinsell and the barrow is in good condition though a depression down the south side suggests that some attempt at excavation has been made. Surveyed at 1:2500. Variations of the name "Ratfyn" have been applied to the area sice the 12th c. (3-4) SU 15834194. Ratfyn barrow, Grinsell 57. A dog digging on the surface disturbed the long bones of an adult inhumation.(5) The skeletal remains have been transferred to Devizes Museum. Acc no. 50.1973. (6)

The barrow has been mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS mapping Project. The barrow is visible as a slight mound, although most photographs show the mound covered by trees. (10-11) |
