Ratfyn Barrow

Hob Uid: 219298
Location :
Wiltshire
Amesbury
Grid Ref : SU1583641944
Summary : A bell barrow with a mound 19m in diameter and 3m high. Traces of a shallow ditch 3m wide are visible which, in being separated from the mound by a sloping berm, suggest that the monument may be best interpreted as a bell barrow. Scheduled.
More information : (SU 15834194) Ratfyn Barrow (NR). (1)

Grinsell's 57. Bowl barrow, diameter 24 paces, height 8ft. (2)

A bowl barrow with no visible ditch. Its measurements accord with
those given by Grinsell and the barrow is in good condition
though a depression down the south side suggests that some
attempt at excavation has been made.

Surveyed at 1:2500.

Variations of the name "Ratfyn" have been applied to the area
sice the 12th c. (3-4)

SU 15834194. Ratfyn barrow, Grinsell 57. A dog digging on the
surface disturbed the long bones of an adult inhumation.(5) The skeletal remains have been transferred to Devizes Museum. Acc no. 50.1973. (6)

Barrow originally recorded as Amesbury 57 by Goddard. (7)

The barrow has been mapped from aerial photographs by both RCHME's Salisbury Plain Training Area NMP and EH's Stonehenge WHS mapping Project. The barrow is visible as a slight mound, although most photographs show the mound covered by trees. (10-11)
