More information : (SU 13393896) Lake House (NR). (1) A late 16th-early 17th c building of flint and stone chequer (see photo). Built by George Duke who bought the estate in 1578. It was gutted by fire in 1912, but was rebuilt and repaired to its original design. (2) Outstanding. (3) Lake House; Late 16th-early 17th century house, originally built by George Duke who bought the estate in 1578. It was burnt in 1912 and rebuilt and repaired to its original design by Detmar Blow. Subsequent additions on the northeast side. The house was originally L-shaped and has the angle partly filled in by a later gabled block with a modern extension at ground floor level. The estate belonged to a religious guild until the mid 16th century and continued in the posession of the Duke family till the end of the 19th century. The Rev. Edward Duke, notable for archaeological research with Colt Hoare, lived here in the early 19th century. Grade II. (4)
Lake House, constructed in 1578 for George Duke, restored in 1898 by Detmar Blow in consultation with Philip Webb. A complete reconstruction of the interior was carried out by Blow following fire damage in 1912. Grade I. (5)
