Summary : A Neolithic long barrow situated in a prominent position on an east facing slope above the valley of the River Avon. The barrow was listed as Downton 2 by Grinsell and comprises a mound 60 metres long with a maximum width of 18 metre aligned north-south across the slope. The mound is 2.5 metres high at the northern end and is flanked by ditches from which material for its construction was quarried. These have become almost entirely infilled and only that flanking the east side of the mound can be seen as a slight hollow. Scheduled.
More information : (SU 16102300) The Giant's Grave (NAT) (Long Barrow) (NR) (1) South-east of Clearbury Ring - Downton 2, a long barrow orientated NE-SW, 200ft long x 50ft wide x 6ft high. It does not appear to have been opened but there is a slight 'sinking' at the larger end, possibly over a cist. The ditches are indistinct as a result of ploughing. (2-3) A well preserved long barrow as described. No trace of side ditches. Published survey (25") revised. (4) Scheduled. (5) Surveyed by the RCHME. (6)
