Summary : Manor house built circa 1557 on site of a Benedictine alien cell, with alterations in 1601, circa 1730 and circa 1907. Built of rendered sarsen and limestone with stone tiled roof. The cell was founded by William de Tancaville in 1114 as a cell of St Georges, Bocherville, and was dissolved in 1378. The house passed to Winchester College in 1391. |
More information : (SU 09907001) Manor House (NR) on site of (NAT) Priory (NR) (Benedictine) (NAT) Avebury Manor, a 16th/17th century mansion built of rubble and stone, with some mullion windows and stone slate roof (2). Built on or close to (3) the site of a small Alien cell of Benedictine Monks, founded before 1114 and dissolved in 1378 (4). Grade 1 (2). See attached guide book. Outstanding. Manor house built c1557 with additions and modifications in 1671, 1730 and c1907. Built of rendered sarson and limestone. The house is on or near the site of a Benedictine cell of St Georges de Boscherville, founded in 1114 and allocated to Fotherghay College in 1411. Fragments of the cell have been built into the present fabric. Much 20th century restoration work. The manor's dovecote is graded II*.
