Summary : The remains of a Franciscan Friary founded in 1257-8 and dissolved in 1539. The only extant remains are part of the precinct wall, and the late 15th century crossing tower, which remained unfinished at the Dissolution. Excavations prior to 1921 revealed that little of the nave survived, except for the east wall of a south chapel or aisle. Parts of the quire have been located. The tower was inserted in the late 15th century, when it was intended to replace the friary buildings with new ones. Scheduled. |
