Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 215819

Hob Uid: 215819
Location :
Wiltshire
All Cannings, Bishops Cannings
Grid Ref : SU0862067060
Summary : Sarsen stones and a slight mound, observed by OGS Crawford, possibly represent traces of a "lost" long barrow in Beckhampton Plantation.
More information : (SU 08626706) Sarsens and signs of slight mound observed here by
OGS Crawford. (1)

Barker examines Stukeley's description of a long barrow south of
Silbury Hill to suggest the existence of a subsequently 'lost' barrow
at Beckhampton Plantation. Using Stukeley's account of the barrow's
location he suggests a siting in the area of SU 09006715 before
drawing attention to Crawford's obervation of sarsens and slight
mound nearby. (2)
