Summary : Two contiguous pits, situated almost on the top of the hill, in the middle of the trackway leading from the farmhouse, excavated by H Cunnington in 1884. The finds, now in Devizes Museum, include two broken cooking pots on hearth, probably Iron Age; also chalk loom weights, two flint mullers, chalk spindle whorl, earthenware sling-bullets (?), iron nails, and perforated piece of bone; also several fragments of Roman pottery. |
More information : Two contiguous pits, situated almost on the top of the hill, in the middle of the trackway leading from the farmhouse occupied by Mr Wentworth at Beckhampton to his farm buildings on the down, excavated by H Cunnington in 1884. The finds, now in Devizes Museum, include two broken cooking pots on hearth, probably Iron Age Phase 2-3 or 3; also chalk loom weights, two flint mullers, chalk spindle whorl, earthenware sling-bullets (?), iron nails, and perforated piece of bone; also several fragments of Roman pottery.
