More information : North of Knoll Down - Crop marks of three ring-ditches visible on air-photographs, situated at the south east end of what is probably a ploughed out cursus (see SU 06 NE 69)
1. Cherhill 13: (A SU 07096986) nearly levelled in Smith's time. 2. Cherhill 14: (C SU 07076992) Small circle in crops. 3. Cherhill 15: (B SU 07056990) A small circle, perhaps enclosing a circle of holes. (1-3) Cherhill 13: A ploughed down bowl barrow, diameter 33.0m, height 0.6m; no trace of ditch. Under crop at time of first visit. Surveyed at 1:2500. Cherhill 14 and 15: OS air photos show that these barrows were totally destroyed when the wartime Yatesbury Camp (since demolished) was constructed. (4)
The three probable Bronze Age barrows referred to by the previous authorities have been mapped from air photographs (including those refered to by source two). It is probable that these are the same as the photographs referred to by source 3. The very slight mound is visible in the centre of `Cherhill 13' and it measures 35m across. `Cherhill 14' is also 35m in diameter and is centred at SU 0709 692. `Cherhill 15' is 15m in diameter and is centred at SU 0709 6994. There are numerous background pits visible in the same field as the barrows and it is impossible to tell which, if nay, are archaeological, and which are natural. None of the pits seemed to form any real patterns or relationships with the barrows. There is some doubt as to whether the linear ditches adjacent to the barrows do form part of a cursus (described in SU 06 NE 69). (5)
